Monitor weather forecasts and road condition reports before departure

Preparation Checklist
- Purchase the correct Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) before entering motorways
- Carry a first-aid kit, warning triangle, and high-visibility vest — mandatory in Austria
- Check alpine pass opening dates if travelling between October and May
- Ensure your vehicle insurance (Green Card) is valid for Austria
- Download offline maps as mobile coverage can be limited in alpine areas
- Familiarise yourself with Austrian speed limits: 50 km/h urban, 100 km/h rural, 130 km/h motorway
- Note that using a mobile phone while driving (without hands-free) carries a €50 fine
- Carry sufficient EUR cash as some rural toll booths and car parks are cash-only
- Check the ASFINAG website for current roadworks and closures before departure
- Understand the 0.5 g/L blood alcohol limit (0.1 g/L for new drivers and professional drivers)
- Be aware that winter tyres are situationally mandatory from November to April
- Register your vehicle details if renting, as rental companies may charge vignette fees separately
